Progress. Honest.
They are saying goodbye in their own way. Playing outlawed tunes on outlawed pipes.
Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you'll live... at least a while!
Ride wi' me men, and if you canna', then walk wi' me!
They may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM!
The builders decided yesterday was Talk Like Braveheart Day. All day. It didn't get on my nerves or anything.
Progress has been huge this week, which is good as I was suffering a major sense of humor failure and not handling things well. It started Monday when The Cowboy popped his head in and told us to move the babies' things out of the nursery fast, as the men were coming through the window.
They weren't kidding.
Luckily the babies were at nursery, as otherwise I doubt they'd be impressed by the new bunk bed system we'd temporarily devised in the hallway where the naughty baby, they'd get the lower bunk.
The window was merely bricked up, as the nursery will shortly become two bathrooms (which will - under no circumstances - be painted this orange color. No more psychadelic orange. Ever.)
The babies' things have been moved back in the nursery now, and they have a nightlight on during the night as the place has no windows, and is darker than night. I have asked The Cowboy for more notice when he's coming in, but I'm stressed to bits about moving things around the house in time for their sledgehammers.
So you might've seen me taking things into my own hands yesterday.
It felt good, because I felt we were stagnating. But within one day, everything's changed. The rains came so the roof had to wait, and instead the builders went about mass demolition, at once changing the shape of the house.
This is where we had a sort of study and the baby toys, now about to become the dining room.
And this is the former lounge, now about to become a kitchen within the next few weeks.
The wooden slats are the floor joists for the new bedroom going upstairs. The tarp covers the ceiling, but a real ceiling is going in next week, as the electrics are going in tomorrow, the gas is being run in today, and the walls and ceiling get plastered next week. This means Steve, the cabinets, the sink, the vent, and more can be moved out of the study and into their new home.
Yesterday, the roof started to go up, which pleases me immensely.
And once they tore down the walls of our old kitchen, the new living room suddenly appeared.
The blocks I'm looking at here form the wall of what will be - behind the wall - a utility room and a wet room (a toilet, sink, and shower without walls, it'll all be tiled so the floor drains out the water).
The kitchen, dining room, and living room all are basically one big room in an L-shape, which we hope brings a sense of light and space. This is the view to what was the back of the living room, now about to be the dining room.
We love that it's one big space.
Everywhere you see holes, there are giant glass doors or giant super-size windows to help bring in more light.
It's hard to see how this will turn out, I know. But at least for the first time we have a feeling of where we're going. This is a good thing, especially since any day now they're going to do Talk Like Inspector Clouseau Day, and then I'll need a stiff drink and my sense of humor.
And now if you'll excuse me, we're off to take babies to swimming lessons while the builders burn the remains ouf our windows and skirting boards in a bonfire in the front garden. We're hoping there'll be a house to come home to, because if there's anything more frightening than a bunch of rowdy builders, it's a bunch of rowdy builders playing with fire (Ralph and Piggy, anyone?).

haha, Favorite picture: you whacking shit in your pj's and slippers!
Posted by: j.m at May 20, 2008 04:35 AMI second the talk like a pirate idea! And do you think you could make a take recording for our amusement, you know, in your free time? The pictures are great, and your house is really coming along. Cowboy seems to be his weight in gold, as evidenced by how quickly the subcontractors are coming in and getting their stuff done.
Posted by: Melissia at May 18, 2008 06:31 PMI swear I would have lost tracks on which part of the house will turn into what kind of room by now. And I would have lost tracks of where I'd put the babies, too.
Arr.
Lily
Talk like Inspector Gadget Day? "Go go gadget screwdriver!"
Oops, hope I'm not giving them any ideas, Helen!
Amazing that you're staying sane, kudos to you. :) The big L shape looks like it's going to be amazing, I'm already jealous!
Posted by: Hannah at May 17, 2008 01:17 AMHmm. What's worse than Talk Like Inspector Clouseau day?
The Talk Like Braveheart Day kinda helps me with the mental image that all your workers sound like Andrew Dan Jumbo.
This almost makes me wanna rip out a wall and start some renovating, too!
Almost.
Posted by: Margi at May 17, 2008 12:33 AMLovin' the updates and pics! Getting closer...
Posted by: Lauren at May 16, 2008 08:09 PMYou now have me envisioning a group of builders dancing around a fire in your quiet country neighborhood chanting, "Kill the house! Leave a mess! Break the bank!" or something along those lines.
Posted by: amy t. at May 16, 2008 07:07 PMI am laughing really hard at talk like Braveheart day. You should tell them about International Talk Like a Pirate Day! Arrrr.
Posted by: Jen at May 16, 2008 03:51 PMYou know, somehow I had envisioned the crew that fixed up Diane Lane's house in "Under the Tuscan Sun". Having them talk like the guys in braveheart kills that image. Damn.
However, if any of them even remotely resembles mel gibson, I'd take it.
Posted by: Tracy at May 16, 2008 03:37 PMSo you're not only living in the house but also working from home in the middle of this??
Posted by: BeachGirl at May 16, 2008 02:33 PMI don't know how you are managing to live there while all that is going on, and with babies, no less! I would be ensconced in a temp. home or apartment somewhere, directing from afar. YOu're made of stronger stuff than I am!
How are the swimming lessons coming along?
This is really amazing to watch! I'm so glad you're documenting it for posterity (and us). :)
Posted by: Lisa at May 16, 2008 02:08 PMI know it feels like it is taking forever, but really? This is getting done remarkably FAST (in my experience). Isn't it fun when you can finally start seeing a glimmer of what it is going to end up as? You are very brave to continue living in and around all this madness! ;)
Posted by: sue at May 16, 2008 01:37 PMWow, I can see the transition already! This is better than watching HGTV :)
Posted by: geeky at May 16, 2008 01:11 PMReal progress ... which as an avid blog reader I am measuring my your changing PJ bottoms!
Happy swimming! :o)
Posted by: Moira at May 16, 2008 12:45 PMThat is SO cool!!
Posted by: ~Easy at May 16, 2008 10:57 AMSuper exciting!
How are the babies enjoying their swimming lessons? I'm thinking of joining up at the leisure centre down the road from our house so I can take Caleb in the learner's pool during public swim time.
