You’re Invited!

OK, because of logistics, you probably aren’t invited to the wedding. I’d love to have you, really, only no one in our real lives knows about the blog and it’s best we keep it that way.

This was the invitation that we’ve been sending out (and still aren’t finished because organization is not our forte, and so there is a possibility you might just get an invitation in the post. You never know.)

We’re a bit behind on most aspects of the wedding, actually. Nora and Melissa have their dresses. Nick has a tie, and he, Alastair and Jeff all need suits. I have a dress that needs tailoring. We haven’t got rings and I have no clue what to do about most elements, I just know that there’s this wedding thing to do.

My wedding fetishist lovely friend has been saving the day with many suggestions, including a real cracker for those in the land of the internet who wanted to be a part of the wedding day – she suggested I find a giant glass bottle and people could send marbles (if they wanted) as something to keep us company into married life and as a physical sign of being in our lives. I couldn’t get the logistics to work, though, so wonder if you want to be a part of what we’ve asked everyone?

We put on the backside of our invitation the following (and I know you’re not supposed to put this kind of thing on invitations, but Emily Post be dammed):

Please, no gifts; we are old and have everything we need. In lieu of gifts, we want you to tell us your two favourite songs – 1 slow song, 1 fast song – to be played during the party, just for fun.

I’m asking the same of you – I’d love to include anyone and everyone who reads this site, so just tell me your two favorite songs (one slow, one fast) and it will be played during the reception party. If you want to, that is. If you do, just leave a comment and welcome to our wedding.

i love this! gorgeous invitations, too. ok. “That’s Where It’s At” by Sam Cooke (slow) and “Hey Ya” by Outkast. I don’t know if the second is my favorite – but it is one of them and the first that came to mind!! Congratulations on your wedding!!

  2. Shannon says:

Congratulations, and fabulous idea! My 2 choices are – Pure-Lightning Seeds and Crash Into Me-Dave Matthews Band.

  3. Michael says:

Our choice for our recessional song was ‘What a Wonderful World’ by Louis Armstrong. That would be my slow choice.

My fast song choice is ‘Cotton-Eyed Joe’ by Rednex :-) If that is too hick, then ‘Crucify’ by Army of Lovers.

I’m so happy for you both. I’ll be one of many that will be there with you in spirit!

  4. Joanna says:

I love everything about your invitation and everything about your wedding. Asking for songs instead of gifts is so classy. Love it!

Anyway, here are my choices….Slow song – How Deep Is Your Love by the Bee Gees, and fast song – Play That Funky Music White Boy by Wild Cherry. I mean how can you go wrong with those??!!!

  5. kimberly says:

I love it. I’ll have to give some thought to songs – I want to “be” there but I bet whatever pops into my head without thought might not be the best suggestion…

  6. Caroline says:

hmmm, what to pick? It has to be James – Sometimes for the fast song and Louis’ We Have All the Time in the World for the slow one (the first dance at our wedding).

Ahh, fantastic invites. Pure class! So excited for you both…

  7. Teresa says:

    Right then, let’s see…

“You Shook Me All Night Long”-AC/DC

“Crimson and Clover”-Tommy James and the Shondells**

**this was our ‘first dance’ song, and we will be celebrating our 15th this summer. It has done well by us, and my hope is that it will do right by you, too. And you are still getting a gift-I just need to get off my ass and get started on it.

  8. Lisa says:

I’m such a sap. I had to wipe away happy tears reading this. I will have to think on songs a bit but I’ll come up with something. Congratulations to you all. Happy, happy. :)

  9. Cissy says:

my first thought at reading these was, “Oh SHIT, I missed it already.” DUH me for reading 03/07 as March seventh. Ok after my head cleared up I realized what a DA I was, but still got a laugh from that one. Cliche yes but Etta James At Last is my favorite slow song. Fast……… Best of You- Foo Fighters. (probably not a great choice but hey, it’s my fav. fast feel awesome song.

  10. Deeleea says:

James Taylor’s Your Smiling Face is my favourite. It’s fast but not very dance-y. Slow? Can’t go past Louis Armstrong’s What a Wonderful World! Enjoy!

  11. irshlas says:

I think this is absolutely fabulous!! If I could be so bold as to add my suggestions to the list:

By Your Side – Sade (slow)
Brand New Day – Sting (fast)

And yes, the slow one was “our” song at my wedding. The fast one just makes me smile every time I hear it :-)

  12. mia says:

oh, piss. have to think about this. slow: ‘throw your arms around me’, hunters and collectors. fast: ‘a little less conversation’, elvis presley.

  13. a says:

Congratulations! Now that’s the kind of wedding I’d like to attend – looks like it will be loads of fun.

Songs: Somebody by Depeche Mode (slow)
Don’t Leave Me This Way by Thelma Houston (fast – everyone needs a little disco)

  14. Jungletwins says:

Faboosh idea, faboosh event! I pick Bright Eyes “First Day of My Life,” for the slow one, and The Knack “My Sharona” for the fast one.

  15. Katy says:

    What an awesome idea!

My fast song? “Walkin’ On Sunshine” by Katrina and the Waves. Always puts me in a good mood. Always.

My slow song? “Runaway” by The Corrs. I hope to one day play this at my own wedding…if I ever meet the guy that is.

  16. marian says:

Fast: the Cure – Mint Car (alternately, Friday I’m in Love)
Slow: James Taylor – Up on the Roof

Best wishes! I’m so excited for y’all.

  17. I like “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton for my slow song, and “Dancing Queen” for the other… not sure if it qualifies as a fast song, but it’s not really slow.

I am there with you in spirit! I know it will be the most wondrous day for you and your family.

  18. p.s. ABBA for Dancing Queen, the original!

  19. I’m still working on the marbles. If I can manage something without losing mine, I’ll let you know!

And you had me at Wedding Fetishist.

  20. Kelly says:

What a great idea! If you’d like to use them, my favorite slow song is “The Luckiest” by Ben Folds. Fast song, for now, would be “Hey, Soul Sister” by Train.

  21. Lauren says:

It appears that Congratulations! are in order. With a date set and invitations -partly- made I’m sure it must start to make everything feel real. For choices I think one of the most gorgeous slow songs is one that has recently graced the John Lewis adverts; Billy Joel’s “She’s Always A Woman”. Then for a faster song my mind happens upon The Pointer Sisters’ “Jump”.

  22. Tracy says:

Hrm….well, I love Ice Cream by Sarah McLachlan, but not sure it would be what you’re looking for in the slow category. Fast…hahaha…Pump It, Black Eyed Peas. LOL

  23. Dotty says:

“Trying My Best To Love You” by Jenny Lewis and “Love Is A Battlefield” by Pat Benatar (oh yeah, I went there)

    So happy for you guys!

  24. B. Durbin says:

Two of my favorite love songs are “Come What May” as sung by Nick DiVirgilio (http://www.ndvmusic.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=2)— very important, NOT the version from Moulin Rouge, the lyrics got changed along the way— and Kevin Gilbert’s “Give Your Love To Me” (http://www.lyricsdownload.com/kevin-gilbert-when-you-give-your-love-to-me-lyrics.html). The second one is slightly silly, starting off fairly reasonable but getting more and more ludicrous as the song goes on. “And all your friends will be genuinely supportive… when you give your love to me.”

In case it’s not clear, first one slow, second one kinda bouncy.

And that’s as much as I’m going to say, because if you get me recommending music I’m going to be here all day.

  25. AmandaL says:

“Dance Me to the End of Love” Madeleine Peyroux was our slow-first-dance song, but I also really like “Destiny” by Zero 7 for the sexy vibe feel of it. Of course, it does talk about being alone in a hotel room watching pr0n… but your guests may not catch it in the beginning? Ours didn’t.
“500 Miles” the Proclaimers (or if you hate them and this song, you could swap it out for the dance song from Napoleon Dynamite “Canned Heat” by Jamiroquai.

Apologies in advance if these are not happy making!

  26. Evelyn says:

“Almost Paradise” (Ann Wilson & Mike Reno) for the slow song. “Old Time Rock & Roll” (Bob Seger) is always fun at a party. Congrats to you & wishing you a wonderful, happy wedding!

  27. HubeiMama says:

I’m going to cheat and give you two slow songs – hope you don’t mind.

#1 is “Years From Here” by Baker & Myers. It’s a country song and was our first dance song at our fake wedding (long story).
#2 is “Could I Have This Dance” by Anne Murray. It was our second song where we invited all of John’s great aunts and uncles out on the floor with us.

Almost 15 years later and both songs still give me chills when I hear them.

Thanks for the memories, too. It was nice to be reminded to play them more often.

  28. Dash says:

    Everything by: Lifehoue

    Its both fast and slow!

  29. kbare says:

    melissa etheridge
    when you find the one

    pat benetar
hit me with your best shot

  30. Amanda says:

Hairy Farmer, count me in for the marbles, or any other such sentiment.
As for songs, all that pops in my head are Latin Salsa songs. Try “No Hay Cama Pa’ Tanta Gente” by El Gran Combo. Listen to it, you’ll enjoy it.
Our first dance song was “Can’t Help Falling in Love”, so that’s my suggestion for the slow one.

I’m so excited for you, I could pee!

  31. Yo-ya Mama says:

Slow: Come Rain or Come Shine / Don Henley’s recorded version

    Fast: Enter Sandman / Metallica

Because I these are two songs I know my husband would dance with me if we could be there.

  32. Julie says:

I hope you like the ones I picked:

“18th Floor Balcony” by Blue October (slow)

“Love is the Only Way In” Robert Randolph & the Family Band (not exactly fast.. but danceable!)

The first song in particular is the one I would have played at my wedding, but my intensely shy groom insisted on eloping!

  33. Pam says:

Well you finally lured me out of lurkdom with this post,Shannon! Slow song – Color My World by Chicago. Yes, it’s schmaltzy, but it has been “our song” for my husband and me for over 35 years….
Fast song- no Canadian prairie wedding would be complete without a polka being played – how about Roll Out the Barrel?

Wishing you, Alastair and the children much joy,

    Pam from Canada

  34. Laurence says:

I have a slightly risky suggestion for you – and a more sensible one!!

Risky: FAST : Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong – Spin Doctors
SLOW: I Won’t Back Down – Tom Petty

Serious: FAST: Black Horse and the Cherry Tree – KT Tunstall
    SLOW: Nightswimming – REM

Please don’t have a go at me!! The “risky” suggestion is just a joke!!

    Laurence

  35. patndixie says:

Love the invitations! I will be thinking of you both on your special day and sending good vibes across the pond. My picks are “Unchained Melody” by the Righteous Brothers (slow), and “I’m So Excited” by the Pointer Sister.

    Patsy R

  36. J says:

Love the invitation, what a wonderful idea! I may need more than a minute to select a song, hope I can drop by later…

  37. melanie says:

Affirmation: Savage Garden (we had that at ours)
I Sing for the Things: Stevie Nicks.

Don’t suppose you could secretly webcam it? :D

  38. jac says:

Very best wishes to you all!
Slow = “Never Tear Us Apart” by INXS, Fast = “I’m Your Man” by George Michael. I think you will be doing a LOT of dancing.

  39. Gill says:

What a fantastic idea, I love the marble thought too!

Fastish: Temptation – Heaven 17 (our song but it didn’t get played at our wedding as the dj messed up)

Slow: Truely, Madly, Deeply – Savage Garden

  40. Lea says:

Awesome! I’m sure everything will come together like it should. For a slow song I would choose Leonard Cohen’s “Always”, sung by Phil Collins. It’s lovely. For a fast song I usually love “Come on Eileen” (not sure who sings it) and “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” by Meatloaf!

  41. Solomon says:

    Here are my suggestions:

Fast: “Back On the Chain Gang” by the Pretenders
Slow: “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” by Bryan Adams

My favorite song ever is probably “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright in Christ” by “Maranatha! Singers”. It starts out slow, speeds up, is A Capella, has great harmonies, and has a Reggae sound. But knowing that would never make it into the mix even if you could find it, I offered the other two. Are you going to publish the play list after the wedding? :)

  42. gemma says:

Lady in Red and Love Shack. Gotta have em!

  43. Moira says:

Chasing Cars – Snow Patrol (slow) and Sweet Caroline – Neil Diamond

I’m sorry … if you are not a Neil fan all I can say is I used to get very scooped with work friends and sing this in various bars in Chelsea VERY loudly. Its a great sing-a-longa drunken friend song!!

    Lovely idea. Lovely people.

    Enjoy babes x

  44. oddybobo says:

Slow – I’ve Been Loving You – Otis Redding. Fast – Mercy – Duffy! But really, I’ve Been Loving You…can’t get much more perfect. :)

  45. Suz says:

Congrats! What a wonderful way to include everyone.

Bodyrockers – I like the way
Shania Twain – From this moment

  46. diamond dave says:

I tend to avoid music recommendations because tastes are so subjective, but I’ll give it a stab. Hope you don’t gag at my choices:

    Little Willy – Sweet (fast)
Fooled Around And Fell In Love (slow)

Can come up with a gazillion choices from my MP3 collection, but I’ll stick with those two.

Congrats on you & Alastair finally tying the know! Good week to get married. I have two nephews’ birthdays, as well as the Fourth that week.

  47. diamond dave says:

Oops, hit the submit key too fast. That last song was by Elvin Bishop.

  48. Melody says:

It took me forever to read the date on the invite correctly… I was scandalized that you had been sandbagging us all this time and had gotten married in March!

    Little Less Conversation – Elvis
Unforgettable – Nat King Cole, or his duet with daughter Natalie Cole

  49. Teresa says:

@Lea-”Come On Eileen” is by Dexy’s Midnight Runners, and one of the best. songs. ever.

  50. Laura says:

Slow – “Are You The One That I’ve Been Waiting For?”
    by Nick Cave

Fast – “Brick House”, ha, ha, ha!

What a wonderful idea for a wonderful wedding. Congrats!

Where have I been all this time?

The stuff I write about!
