OK, because of logistics, you probably aren’t invited to the wedding. I’d love to have you, really, only no one in our real lives knows about the blog and it’s best we keep it that way.
This was the invitation that we’ve been sending out (and still aren’t finished because organization is not our forte, and so there is a possibility you might just get an invitation in the post. You never know.)
We’re a bit behind on most aspects of the wedding, actually. Nora and Melissa have their dresses. Nick has a tie, and he, Alastair and Jeff all need suits. I have a dress that needs tailoring. We haven’t got rings and I have no clue what to do about most elements, I just know that there’s this wedding thing to do.
My wedding fetishist lovely friend has been saving the day with many suggestions, including a real cracker for those in the land of the internet who wanted to be a part of the wedding day – she suggested I find a giant glass bottle and people could send marbles (if they wanted) as something to keep us company into married life and as a physical sign of being in our lives. I couldn’t get the logistics to work, though, so wonder if you want to be a part of what we’ve asked everyone?
We put on the backside of our invitation the following (and I know you’re not supposed to put this kind of thing on invitations, but Emily Post be dammed):
Please, no gifts; we are old and have everything we need. In lieu of gifts, we want you to tell us your two favourite songs – 1 slow song, 1 fast song – to be played during the party, just for fun.
I’m asking the same of you – I’d love to include anyone and everyone who reads this site, so just tell me your two favorite songs (one slow, one fast) and it will be played during the reception party. If you want to, that is. If you do, just leave a comment and welcome to our wedding.
-S.

This is a brilliant idea, Shannon!
Slow song by Paul Weller “You do something to me”
Fast song by AC/DC..”Highway to hell”!!!
Love this idea. Since I will probably never get married, I’ll suggest the song I want played as my wedding song, “Make You Feel My Love” by Adele. As for a fast one, my current happy dance songs are “Say Hey” by Michael Franti and “Bulletproof” by La Roux (I totally think the singer looks like you, btw. I think it’s her bone structure and the shape of her mouth).
Slow – “Grow old with You” by Adam Sandler as performed by OC Times
Fast – “Punk Rock 101″ by Bowling for Soup
Fast: Honky Cat, Elton John
Slow: Into the Mystic, Van Morrison. Or any other Van Morrison.
Ok, I totally understand if you didn’t want to use these!!
Slow – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20PQBtyfNZY
‘All I want is you’ by Barry Louis Polisar
Fast – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSaNibKFmG4
‘Looking for love’ Dave’s radio edit of Karen Ramirez.
If neither of these are bearable might I suggest Roy Orbison’s ‘You got it’ – everyone loves Roy surely!
I am very excited for you,
abs x
FUN FUN!!
Slow Song – Johnny Rivers “Slow Dancing (Swaying to the music)
Fast Song – Lady Gaga “Just dance”
Fast: “Love Shack” – B-52′s. Don’t know why, but that song always makes me smile…. Slow song: “12th of Never” by Johnny Mathis. Sorry, but that song still does it for me. Best wishes and happiness to you!
OK, because I’m a goober and recently watched one of my favorite movies again and subsequently can’t get these songs out of my head:
Slow: She’s Like the Wind (Patrick Swayze)
Fastish: Love is Strange (Mickey and Sylvia)
Bonus: I’ve Had the Time of My Life (as recorded by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes)
All from the Dirty Dancing soundtrack, which I own. :-P
See? Goober. LOL
For slow songs:
God Bless the Broken Road by Rascal Flatts
I Could Not Ask For More by Edwin Mc Cain
I Found Love When I Found You by Kenny Wayne Shepherd
Fast Songs:
Signed, Sealed Delivered, I’m Yours by Stevie Wonder
You’re Still the One by Shania Twain
How Sweet It Is To Be Loved by You by James Taylor
I know you asked for one each but all of these seem so appropriate.
Best of you everything to you Shannon & Alastair! You both deserve it!!
slow: the rainbow connection (the Muppets)
fast: Take a little one step (no no nanette)
L.O.V.E. sung by Nat King Cole (‘v’ is very very extraordinary…)
gotta agree with many of songs mentioned in the previous comments – walking on sunshine make me smile…
Crikey! You’ll be partying all night at this rate. This is such a lovely idea.
With or without you (U2)
Spinning around (Kylie Minogue)
P.S. Don’t leave the wedding ring shopping too late because we did that and found that it was impossible to buy rings three weeks before the wedding!
What a great idea.
Slow song(s): Make you feel my love-the Adele version, Marry me-Amanda Marshall,
Fast song (s) :the way I am AND You and I- Ingrid Michaelson, you make it real for me-James Morrison
Sounds like a lovely party!
Curtis Mayfeld – Moving on up – fast and summery too
Slow – I love Etta James At Last and I’ll be there by the Jackson Five cos you are allowed to be cheesy at a wedding.
I can’t believe how happy I am for you–given that we really don’t know each other at all! But happy is what I am. . . you’re going to have SO much fun at your wedding, if this little exercise is any indication. I can’t wait to see pics. As for songs, boy, so many:
SLOW: “Our House” (CSNY) OR “Naive Melody” (Shawn Colvin version. . .”Hi yo I got plenty of time. . .Hi yo you got light in your eyes… And you’re standing here beside me. . . I love the passing of time)
FAST: “Here Comes My Girl” (Tom Petty) OR “You’re My Best Friend” (QUEEN. . . I dunno, does that count as fast-ish)?
Here’s to LOVE, and moreover, here’s to COMMITMENT!
Some more Canadiana for your consideration:
Slow:
Castlemusic- We Always Change
Leonard Cohen- Hallelujah
Tragically Hip- Ahead by a Century
Fast:
Kn’aan- Wavin’ Flag
Wintersleep- Weighty Ghost
Metric- Combat Baby or Gimmie Sympathy
Fast: ‘Big Jumps’ or ‘Jungle Drum’ by Emiliana Torrini
or
‘Counting Down The Days’ by Natalie Imbruglia
Slow: ‘Nothing Brings Me Down’ by Emiliana Torrini
I absolutely *adore* this idea. How beautiful is asking for songs? Perfect~
That said … I would love to “be” there, but my tastes in music are … interesting. So I’m going to give you two sets of suggestions: One set the ones I would really, really love to have played, the other set the ones I think might be slightly less awful for other people to have to listen to.
The ones I would LOVE you to play:
Slow: The Highwayman by Phil Ochs. (I have no idea how difficult this will be to get hold of and/or how much you will like it, since it’s a sad love song and since Phil Ochs is American and he’s obscure now even here, but if you actually want to play it and can’t find it, I own it and can send it to you … if that’s not too forward of me. *anxious look*)
Fast: Happy Together by The Turtles. (It’s not super fast, but I find it cheerful, upbeat and dance-y :D)
The ones that are less obscure/strange and I would be okay with:
Slow: Unforgettable by Nat King Cole (I just find this one classic and beautiful)
Fast: This Love by Maroon 5 (Again not super fast, but it has a good beat and some parts are fairly fast)
Also, will you publish the final playlist on the blog? I’d love to see it :)
This is totally “squee”-tastic!
Ok – fast: “Got to Give It Up” / Marvin Gaye. The power of Marvin compels all to boogie down.
iTunes UK Link:
http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/the-best-of-marvin-gaye/id311650187
Slow: This was harder. Winner is “So In Love” by Cole Porter. I like the version from Kiss Me Kate.
iTunes UK Link:
http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/kiss-me-kate-broadway-cast/id42327525
but – Dinah Washington’s version is rock!
http://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/cole-porter-songbook/id181801922
Let me know if you need me to send you the music. Happy to do it – and so happy for your family!
How terribly exciting that it is coming up so soon! I am so happy for you and your family!
Ok, for songs: fast would be “Beautiful Day” U2 or “If I Had a Million Dollars” Barenaked Ladies and slow is “Home” by Duncan Shiek (try and listen here if you don’t know it http://popup.lala.com/popup/360569483827578413 — and stick with it because it picks up and is such a lovely and romantic song that makes me want to cry every time I hear it.)
Love it! Slow one – I like it, not sure the tempo is slow, maybe mid, but the word and mood seem perfect.
Fooled Around and Fell in Love, Elvin Bishop
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBNUrYyGI7A&feature=related
and Seal, Love’s Divine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iczaDcixBj4 (Sorry, video is a bit of a downer, but I love the lyrics and song.)
Fast – have to have Viva Las Vegas by ZZ Top
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLUl8xkKSTk
and
Should I Stay or Should I Go, The Clash
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZBPu7jJbJU
Have a lovely day, have WAY too much to drink and jump up and down on the fast ones!
OhOhOh. I thought of another one.
“I Chose Right” – the John Barrowman version, of course.
Please blast some 1980′s tune and I’ll be happy. I haven’t read everyone’s comments, but I’m sure one of those fits the bill. I so wish I had gotten an invite, but your not very bright follower, would think “Damn I missed their awesome March 7th clebration” You know many of us will be thinking of you on your special day. All we ask for are pictures. We aren’t a demanding lot are we?
Two lovely songs about being in love:
Ryan Adams – Two
Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros – Home
May your special day sit in your heart exactly where you want it to.
Gorgeous idea!
Slow song: “Night and Day” Steve Lawrence
Fast song: “End of the world as we know it” REM
Slow “Our Love Is Here to Stay” Billie Holiday, Louie Armstrong/Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, Harry Connick jr
Fast “Groove Is In the Heart” by Deee-lite, How Your Love Makes me Feel by Diamond Rio
Congrats!
What a responsibility! I spent all day thinking about it and most of the day consulting you tube and wikipedia and several friends and finally came up with these two for a very specific reason. Both are of Scottish origin and one is very traditionally sung at weddings it is called The Lewis Bridal Song or Mairi’s Wedding and it is sung by The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ymd6k949Rkc&feature=related. My second selection is for the slow dance and it is also sung by the Clancy Brothers, but there is a group that does a wonderful version as well, but I am not sure if you will find a download and that version is by the Corries. The song is called The wild Mountain Thyme or Will you Go Lassie Go http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKvB3g3HEPQ&feature=related .
My thought is that surely there will be some Scots there, that way someone will have a chance to do a reel and perhaps you or Alastair have Scottish ancestry, or at least it will remind you of your trips to Scotland.
Much joy to you both on your day.
Oh, good idea, fast or slow,I don’t know, just listen:
“Higher Love” Steve Winwood: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Z-fE1l9SZ4&feature=related
Have a gorgeous party and be happy!
…and here’s the slow one (caution, might make you cry like it just did to me):
Steve Winwood “Cat’t find my way home” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VT-SFgkVlno
So nice, yet so difficult to choose! Anyway, I’ll do a quick-pic from what I am listening at the moment:
Slow: a new favourite and very becomming for a wedding do, “Just you and me” by Zee Avi. Totally fantastic.
Fast: “Suerte” (“Whenever, wherever”) by Shakira
Bonus track (just because I am Argentinian and cannot fail to love tango) “Luisito” by Daniel Melingo. It’s a modern tango, no lyrics just music, and I always get goosebumps when I hear it.
Ciao!
Snow Patrol: Chasing Cars
Catch22: Keasbey Nights
Such a fantastic idea! Congratulations on your upcoming wedding….
SLOW – Follow You Follow Me, Genesis
FAST – It Takes Two, Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock
So I’m showing my age with that fast choice, but for some reason it’s just a song that seems to get people up and dancing!! :-)
Here’s two from our wedding (way back in 2000)… Slow – “Make you Feel My Love” by Bob Dylan (awesome lyrics – has been redone by everyone from Garth Brooks to Billy Joel, but the original is the best) and, the song with which my husband serenaded me, “Word Up” by Cameo. Yeah, we’re classy people.
Slow – I don’t need a hero by Concrete Blonde
Fast (it’s techno) – Shallow Nation by Icon of Coil (Love Shack is fabulous if techno makes your ears bleed) :)
I’d love to see the final playlist too!
Count my vote for “God Bless the Broken Road” (originally recorded by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.) I’ve never heard a song that more perfectly expressed the route to happiness (for us anyway, and now you!) hope you get a chance to listen to the lyrics, anyway.
don’t have a suggestion for fast song – my hubby says “I Like to Move It Move It” (theme from Madagascar) is a children’s song and too silly!
love to you all on your special day.
I think I’m probably about the same age as Alistair. I think he deserves a trip back to those heady days of his youth with something from the ’80s. I’ll offer up “True” (Spandau Ballet) and “Drives me Crazy” (Fine Young Cannibals).
You could feed him the line “I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar” and see if he bursts into song. It might make for an amusing interlude while dinner comes to the boil.
What a fun idea! I won’t be virtually offended if you don’t play these, but here are two of my favorites from our own wedding reception:
I know it’s corny but “At Last” by Etta James for the slow song…
Our friends (I am a bit older than you) and I really liked “You shook me all night long” by AC/DC, along with “Rock Lobster” by B52s as fast songs.
Whatever music you play, wishing you a fabulous party!
I’m going to assume you mean favorite wedding appropriate songs and not my favorites ever, since it’s not like playing “You Oughta Know” at a wedding is a good idea. Ever. But I do want to recommend a couple of atypical wedding songs, so my recommendations are:
(fast) “Love You Madly” – Cake
(slow) “A Sorta Fairytale” – Tori Amos
Alanis’ cover of “Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall in Love)” by Cole Porter is a lot of fun, too. If you’re having a hard time finding any of the songs, by the way, I have sort of a disgustingly large collection of music- mostly rock, but some jazz, blues, country, whatever – so let me know and I’d be happy to help if I can.
Wow, Shannon, what a wonderful idea… and here are my favourites: slow: Love of my Life, Queen
and fast(ish): Hammer to Fall, by Queen, too.
Old-fashioned, but so am I.
Best wishes, have a gorgeous day and may you forever live in love,
Lily
Ok ok it took me a day and a half to really really think of some good songs! :)
Slow: Glitter in the Air – Pink
Fast: Bad Touch – Bloodhound Gang (Hehehe)
Congratulations!! Nothing but the best to you and yours! :)
Fast one – Groove is in the Heart – DeeLite
or
Humpty Dance – Digital Underground
Your Choice!
Slow One – Maybe I’m Amazed – Paul McCartney and Wings
I could NOT be happier for you and your beautiful family. As I plan our own special day here, I’m thinking of you and yours, and wishing you all the best…
Slow – Maybe I’m Amazed by Paul McCartney (I’m prejudiced here – it was my wedding song!)
Fast – I Believe in You by Kylie Minogue, for ha has The Bitch is Back by Elton John
Enjoy your day – you both deserve it!
Slow Romantic Song: The Luckiest by: Ben Folds (take a listen, it is so sweet)
Fast Song: Come on Eileen by: Dexy’s Midnight Runners (who can’t help but jump up and down and sing a long?
Meredith
Cool invite! Never saw that done before! You have loads of great song suggestions now! I won’t add to it! Just want to wish you the best of luck! :-)
Slow: The Luckiest by Ben Folds
Fast? Uh…
Just saw this, sorry. Something wrong with my reader. And trying not to sulk because not only am I not invited to the wedding, I wasn’t invited to see books with you either. But I’m rising above it, and I know the wedding hasn’t happened yet, and I want to wish you all the best, so here you go:
Slow: Nightswimming (REM)
Fast: I will not be afraid of women (Dar Williams)
Hope it goes marvellously well.
Thalia x
