When the Cat’s Away, the Mice Redecorate

I redecorated.

It happens.

I think it runs in the family – my mother used to move furniture around constantly, my dad would grumble that if he were Helen Keller he’d be dead. I wonder if there was something subliminal in that.

Alastair was in Sweden last week visiting Melissa and Jeff’s schools for parent-teacher conferences (he did so with the Swunt, whom he hadn’t seen in a few years and whom has – strangely – grown her hair out, dyed it dark brown, and turned up wearing a T-shirt with an American flag on it. Curious.) Anyway, while he was gone I attacked the master bedroom, despite Alastair very thoughtfully loading up all of season 1 of True Blood on the TV hard disk for me.

As I mentioned, the bedroom used to have cream-colored walls with one shocking dark teal accent wall.

It doesn’t anymore.

I took two photos after I’d already started moving furniture away from the walls, so ignore the mess.

I worked it. Hard. I went mocha, which was not only the color I wanted but fortuitously the color that B&Q put on sale.

Then we decided we didn’t like the positioning of the furniture, so we moved things around.

Additionally, I decided the chaise needed a new cover and bought one cheap off of ebay.

That writing on the wall is from here. You might recognize the poem, I’ve had it around before. It’s something I heard a long time ago – years actually – and have always thought it sweet. It’s not about romantic love to me, it’s about something a little more quiet, a little more reserved but no less felt.

Fuck me, I sound so very zen there.

Anyway, the gentleman’s chest that was imported from the States, abused, and which we rescued and did up from ebay fits perfectly into a little corner.

It’s topped with things we love – Alastair’s Australian bush hat, two sentimental candlesticks, a framed photo of the babies’ first smiles, and a jewelry box handmade by my great-aunt.

It’s now a peaceful room. It’s not complete, obviously –

- the nightstands need to be screwed into the wall, more blinds put up, pictures moved around and the lighting needs to be done (ergo you can just see the stand of bank of halogen lights we have in there as we finish the room off).

But I love it.

I think it’s wonderfully relaxing, and god knows that is needed.

The new (ongoing) master bedroom.

PS-if you, um, wanted to nominate me here, then that…well that would be really ok. ‘Kthanxbai.

  1. RAGE! NAUGHTY Shannon! I was going to buy you both that decal for a wedding present! I clocked it when you linked to it months ago and was surreptiously looking around when I visited to ensure you didn’t have it yet! BAH!
*trudges off back to drawing board, muttering viciously*
    You’re TOTALLY getting a fucking figurine now…!

Nominated. Best of luck babe. Adam brought home an iPad from work yesterday for us to play with, but we couldn’t pry it from Veronica’s hands.

Love the room. I know its tired and lame, but come on over here and I will put you to work.

And too funny about the Swunt. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery-or some such shit.

This is stunningly beautiful. Great work! Love every bit of it. Also, True Blood is fantastic – hope you enjoy!

Very pretty! I love to rearrange furniture, but my husband keeps buying houses with only one suitable furniture arrangement. So frustrating…

I love, love, love the colour and personally prefer the chaise with the cover on and positioned with the arm against the wall. Plus it looks like the BEST place to curl up with a book in a patch of sunshine! Oh, and the natural light is begging for a series of portraits!

  6. Mitzi says:

    ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS

  7. kenju says:

It looks wonderful and very serene.

  8. Kath says:

    Lovely, Shannon. Simply lovely.

  9. I love where you’ve put the bed. I would have done the exact same thing. It needs to face a window. So you can lie the wrong way around, with your head near the window, for snoozing. Perfect!

It looks amazing. Coming from a woman whose bedroom is electric blue with a giant fox sign painted on it (you know the motorbike racing sign thing?) my standards aren’t very high. Still, gorgeous room.

(We haven’t redecorated yet. I’m too broken and my partner is a bigger procrastinator than I am, so electric blue it is. Ugh – it’s hideous.)

Where have I been all this time?

The stuff I write about!
