How to Create a Bathroom

Take a nursery.

Brick up the window.

Have maniac builders rip out the ceiling, cupboards, and punch a hole through the wall where a window will be installed in what will be the en-suite, once the wall goes up dividing the room into two parts.

Plasterers come by and plaster the en-suite (1/3 of the former nursery) and the family bathroom (2/3 of the former nursery).

In the meantime live in a piece-of shit-mostly-stripped-out bathroom, which has had a window punched in the shower as it will shortly be a bedroom.

(The red towel and and wooden sticks are holding in place a cover so that we can pee without being seen from the builder’s tower that is just outside that window.)
Paint the new bathroom 100,000 times. We chose Dragonfly for the top coat, which I adore.
Nearly kill yourself trying to find bathroom white goods for decent prices. Offer bribes, blow jobs, and beer. Finally succeed with only minimal damage to your pride and your jaw being only slightly tired.
Have the plumber plumb in water since, you know, that’s essential. Have him also fit the shower tray.
Then?
Tile until your tears bleed red.

Accept the jokes the builders make, that the bathroom reminds them alternately of a public bathroom/Italian restaurant/abattoir (Angus’ comment)/dentist office (my comment)/nightclub courtesy of the tiling. Accept the sentence you hear a few times, that “well, it’s not the worst job I’ve ever seen”. Hold your head up, for your plumbing and your relationship have remained intact for the creation of the bathroom.
It’s not finished yet – there’s some tiling trim to do around the doors once the builders finish the archetrave (which you can see in the photo with the sink in it) and, you know, a door would be good. Some small shelves need to go up, the shower cabin gets finished today, and there’s some touch-up painting to be done. But all in all, it’s nearly there.

And in the end, was it worth it?

Fucking-A it was.

    WOW!
Seriously dude, I don’t think ANY of us understood the scale of the reno you undertook until you started posting pictures. It looks beautiful…the whole lot of it…but HOLY SHIT…the work…the sheer work involved!
Enjoy it, you’ve earned a good soak (or 13)

  3. Trainy says:

It’s beautiful! I have one question for you though; what is it with the heated towel racks? I see them all the time in the bathrooms in Europe on House Hunters International.

  4. wRitErsbLock says:

    It’s beautiful! Congratulations!
I hope you had a glass of wine or champagne in that glorious tub with you.

  5. Erin says:

It looks amazing! I think after all that word you’d have to pry my kicking and screaming out of that bathroom! And I really REALLY Love the wall color.

  6. Mei says:

it’s definitely an improvement on the nursery colours

  7. tanis says:

Love that tub! I drool whenever I walk past one in a shop and fondle it occasionally. Our bathroom is way too small for it so I’ll have to live vicariously through you. Enjoy!

  8. geeky says:

It looks so awesome! Your blog is way better than HGTV. I had no idea that bathtub was so HUGE until I saw the photo of you in it. It must be immensely satisfying to see how great everything is turning out. Can’t wait to see more!

  9. Amanda says:

    It’s fabulous!

  10. Clancy says:

Why such a small tub? j/k. Nice heated towel rack!! I wanted one of those in the bathroom I redid (kinda’ rare in the states), but settled on a radiant floor.

  11. Lisa says:

It’s amazing! You have definitely earned yourself several nice long soaks. :) Beautiful work and the tile looks fantastic!

I am so jealous of that tub.
Like others, I had no sense of scale until the picture of you in it. Wow. I think that tub’s bigger than my entire bathroom.

  16. Tracy says:

OMG It’s BEAUTIFUL. What a lovely, lovely room. And I agree – until you put the picture on there of you in the tub, the sense of scale was wonky. But wow. And I don’t see a thing wrong with that tiling job! Gorgeous!

  17. Heather says:

I like it!! Can you come do my house next?? :-)

I’d have to say I do love the old world tiling look. The black and white makes me think of my grandmother’s bathroom back in germany. It’s a clean look, but very calming….
now bring on the candles and bubble bath!

  22. Theresa says:

I think the bathroom and the tiling look wonderful!

  27. Margi says:

How angry with me would you be if I totally copied your bathroom colors? I ADORE it! I’m jealous. Envious, even.
    Enjoy it!
(P.S. I hope the tile didn’t break you guys up – but DAYUM, it’s gorgeous!)

  28. Super Sarah says:

Wow, puts our little bathroom remodel to shame! We just regrouted our tiles! I love your bath and the high taps. Gorgeous.

    I love, love the bathtub!

  30. Kimberly says:

I LOVE IT! The tub and paint in particular are great, great choices. Nice job, team!

  31. Donna says:

So what was it that was wrong with the tiles? They look great to me. I love that tub. Is the sink moving a little to the right? Or is it staying there? I only ask cuz it looks like it is hanging over the edge of the tub, but it could just be the picture.
I cannot wait to see how you decorate. And really love the shower and color too. You can get the whole family in that tub. Nice. Enjoy your soak!

  32. SCY says:
